From Willows stunned expression, Ryder knew she was thinking the same thing he had when the red-haired, green-eyed teenager had been identified as Audrey, rather than Tansy, Kane.

"All those times Mama up and disappeared for days or weeks when I was small…it's possible, I suppose." She was talking more to herself than to him. "Could Grandpa Jonah have known? When did it start? When she was a wild teenager? Is that what Grandpa feared when he kept bemoaning how Tansy reminded him of her?"

"If your mother really was here, at least you know she got back to your own time, and you can, too."

Something Ryder didn't want to consider—he was getting used to having Willow around. But he couldn't even comprehend the complexities of having generations of Kane women racing back and forth through the centuries. He just barely believed this time travel was possible to begin with.

"Gives you something to think about, doesn't it?" he muttered darkly.

"I'll have plenty of time to think after I find Tansy and get her home." She fiddled with the silver-and-turquoise clip holding her hair to the side. "She has to be here somewhere."

"And we'll figure out where," Ryder said with more certainty than he was feeling. Once you knew the rules could be broken, how could a person be certain of anything? "It's just a matter of patience and persistence."

Willow turned a grateful if fleeting smile on him. "We will find her…and clear you."

"I'm not important."

When he'd suggested they watch each other's backs, Ryder had done so for Willow's sake, so nothing would happen to her before she could escape back to her own time. He was used to taking care of himself. And if bad luck caught up to him, then he was only getting what he deserved, anyway. A man could only run from his fate for so long.

"You are important," she murmured. "To me."

Gazing into Willow's eyes, Ryder caught a glimmer of something fleeting, yet breathtaking—the sensation of what it would be like to be loved again. But all too soon he would lose her as he had every person who'd ever meant anything to him. He couldn't count on her being around long, and he knew it. Why did the realization make him ache so? At least she wouldn't die like the others…though she would still be out of his reach and, therefore, dead to him.

Unable to accept that, he drew her to him, to his heart, and held her there for what seemed like forever. But forever was a long, long time. Forever was an interminable life without her. She was clutching his arms, shuddering against him. Ryder pulled back slightly, touched her face. Willow's eyes shone. Her expression was open…inviting.

Scooping her face between both hands, he kissed her forehead, her cheek, her mouth, each brush of his lips against her flesh sending his emotions careening. He wanted her more than any woman he'd ever had. But he couldn't have her. He knew that. No matter what he did, he couldn't bind her to him.
